About

Why Visit Preah Vihear?

Preah Vihear is one of the most dramatically sited temples in Southeast Asia — built on the edge of a 600-metre cliff overlooking Thailand, approached via a series of monumental staircases through layers of forest. The remote setting and difficult access mean it receives far fewer visitors than Angkor, making the experience genuinely extraordinary.

Preah Vihear Temple (UNESCO)

The 11th-century Khmer temple of Preah Vihear was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008. Its position on the Dangrek Escarpment means that approaching from the Cambodian side involves a winding mountain road, while the views from the temple’s highest sanctuary encompass a vast panorama of lowland Cambodia stretching to the Tonle Sap. The site was contested between Cambodia and Thailand for decades; today it is peacefully administered by Cambodia.

Koh Ker

Within the province, the 10th-century temple complex of Koh Ker — former capital of the Khmer Empire — features a seven-tiered sandstone pyramid (Prasat Thom) that can be climbed for remarkable views. Unlike Angkor, Koh Ker sees relatively few visitors and retains an atmosphere of genuine discovery.
