What to See at Prasat Preah Vihear

The Processional Causeway

Unlike most Khmer temples, which run east–west on flat ground, Preah Vihear is built along a single 800-metre axis climbing the mountain itself, through a sequence of five gopuras (gateway pavilions) connected by staircases — a deliberately dramatic approach culminating at the cliff edge.

The Central Sanctuary

The temple’s main sanctuary sits at the highest point, its carved sandstone lintels and pediments among the finest Angkorian-era stonework outside the main Angkor park. From here, the Dangrek Escarpment drops away almost 600 metres to the Cambodian plain below.

The Border History

Preah Vihear sits directly on the Cambodia–Thailand border and was the subject of a territorial dispute dating to the colonial era. The International Court of Justice ruled in Cambodia’s favour in 1962 and reaffirmed the surrounding area in 2013 — a history that adds context to the temple’s heavily guarded, remote access today.

How to Get to Prasat Preah Vihear

Prasat Preah Vihear sits in Cambodia’s far north, roughly 4–5 hours by road from Siem Reap.

  • From Siem Reap: 4–5 hours by car via Anlong Veng, doable as a long day trip or overnight in nearby Sra Em
  • From Phnom Penh: 6–7 hours by car; most visitors approach via Siem Reap instead
  • At the base: A short moto-taxi or 4x4 ride is required for the final, steep ascent to the temple itself

Best Time to Visit

Visit in the dry season (November–March) for the clearest views across the plain and the most stable road conditions on the approach. Late afternoon light is particularly dramatic from the cliff-edge sanctuary, though check closing times in advance.

Practical Information

  • $10 entry ticket, purchased at the base of the mountain
  • Border security personnel are present throughout — follow posted guidance and keep to marked paths, as some surrounding areas remain off-limits
  • The site involves significant walking and stairs on uneven ancient stone — wear sturdy shoes
  • Limited facilities; bring water and sun protection for the exposed clifftop sections

Nearby Attractions

Koh Ker, the 10th-century former capital of the Khmer Empire with its striking stepped pyramid, lies about 2 hours south and is often combined with Preah Vihear on a multi-day northern Cambodia itinerary.
