About
Why Visit Oddar Meanchey?
Oddar Meanchey was one of the last Khmer Rouge strongholds to fall, and the shadow of that history is tangible in its landscape and communities. The province’s infrastructure has developed significantly since peace came in the late 1990s, but it remains one of Cambodia’s quietest corners.
Anlong Veng
The town of Anlong Veng is a unique and sobering destination — the final headquarters of the Khmer Rouge leadership, where Pol Pot died in 1998. The former homes and command posts of senior Khmer Rouge figures have been partially preserved as sites of dark tourism, offering insight into one of the 20th century’s most devastating regimes. The Pol Pot cremation site is marked by a simple memorial on a hillside.
Choam Ksant Border Area
The border region with Thailand features dramatic cliff scenery at Preah Vihear province’s edge, accessible from Oddar Meanchey via rough roads. Best visited with a local guide and during the dry season.
