About

Why Visit Kep?

Kep occupies just 336 square kilometres on Cambodia’s southern coast — a province so small you can walk across it. Yet within this compact territory it packs in some of the country’s most distinctive experiences: the famous crab market, the haunting ruins of French colonial and royal villas reclaimed by jungle, and offshore access to Rabbit Island.

The Crab Market

Kep’s crab market is one of Cambodia’s great food experiences. Fisherwomen sell freshly caught crabs from floating bamboo cages at the dock, priced by weight and cooked to order at the market restaurants. The definitive preparation is crab with fresh Kampot pepper — green peppercorns still on the stalk, stir-fried with butter and crab. Eat at sunset watching the crab boats come in.

Rabbit Island (Koh Tonsay)

A 20-minute boat trip from Kep brings you to Rabbit Island — a small wooded island with white sand beaches, clear water, and a handful of simple bungalows. Day visitors and overnighters can swim, snorkel, and eat fresh seafood. It is everything a Cambodian beach should be: simple, beautiful, unhurried.

Villa Ruins

Kep’s most evocative sight costs nothing: the ruined modernist villas scattered through the hills, built in the 1960s and abandoned during the Khmer Rouge years. Never rebuilt, they stand as haunting architectural monuments, their concrete frames engulfed in tropical vegetation.

Kep National Park

A forested hill rises directly behind town, laced with a well-marked loop trail past troops of long-tailed macaques and more villa ruins reclaimed by jungle. The short Sunset Rock spur trail is the highlight — a clifftop viewpoint over the Gulf of Thailand toward Rabbit Island, best timed for late afternoon.
