About

Why Visit Takéo?

Takéo sits on the main highway south of Phnom Penh, making its ancient sites among the most accessible in Cambodia. The province was part of the pre-Angkorian kingdom of Funan — one of the earliest civilizations in mainland Southeast Asia — and the legacy of that history is evident in scattered temples across the flat rice-farming landscape.

Tonle Bati

Just 35km south of Phnom Penh, Tonle Bati is a 12th-century Angkorian temple complex on the shores of a reservoir. Ta Prohm (not to be confused with the famous Siem Reap version) is the principal temple — intimate, well-preserved, and almost entirely tourist-free on weekdays. Cambodian families picnic on the lakeside at weekends, making it a genuinely local experience.

Phnom Chisor

A pyramid-shaped hill rising abruptly from the flat plains south of Tonle Bati, Phnom Chisor is topped by an 11th-century Angkorian sanctuary with panoramic views extending 40km in every direction. The climb is steep (more than 400 steps), but the combination of ancient stones, working temple, and vast views makes it one of the most rewarding half-days near Phnom Penh.
