What to See at Beng Mealea
The Unrestored Ruins
Unlike every major temple inside the Angkor park, Beng Mealea has had almost no restoration work. Entire galleries have collapsed into vast piles of carved sandstone blocks, now half-buried in tree roots and moss — this is the closest most visitors will get to the “lost temple in the jungle” image that drew early French explorers to Angkor in the first place.
The Central Sanctuary
Despite the collapse, Beng Mealea’s layout closely mirrors Angkor Wat — a moat, concentric galleries, and a central tower — leading many historians to believe it served as either a precursor or a deliberate stylistic twin built around the same period.
The Wooden Walkway
A raised wooden walkway threads through the most dramatically collapsed sections, letting visitors climb over and through fallen masonry that would otherwise be impassable. It’s the most adventurous, least “managed” temple experience near Siem Reap.
How to Get to Beng Mealea
Beng Mealea is about 40km east of Siem Reap — roughly 1 hour each way by road.
- Tuk-tuk: $25–35 round trip; a long ride, so most drivers prefer a car for this distance
- Car with driver: $40–50, often combined with Koh Ker as a full “remote temples” day trip from Siem Reap
- Organised tour: Frequently bundled with Koh Ker as a long day trip (7–8 hours total)
Best Time to Visit
Visit in the dry season (November–April) when the wooden walkways and jungle paths are at their most stable. In the wet season, the site can be muddy, slippery, and visually obscured by dense overgrowth.
Practical Information
- Separate $5 ticket required — not included in the Angkor Pass
- A local guide (hired at the entrance, $10–15) is genuinely useful here for navigating the collapsed sections safely
- Sturdy, closed-toe shoes are essential — this is the most physically demanding temple visit near Siem Reap
- Far fewer facilities than the main Angkor park — bring water
Nearby Attractions
Beng Mealea is commonly paired with Koh Ker (about 1.5 hours further by road) for travelers with a full day and a car, combining two of Cambodia’s most remote and atmospheric Angkorian sites.
