The Main Temple

The central sanctuary rises 65 metres above the jungle — taller than Notre Dame Cathedral. The five lotus-shaped towers represent Mount Meru, home of the gods in Hindu cosmology. Climb to the upper tier for panoramic views (steep stairs, dress code enforced: knees and shoulders covered).

The Bas-Reliefs

Angkor Wat’s most remarkable feature is its 800-metre gallery of bas-reliefs — intricate stone carvings depicting scenes from Hindu mythology (the Churning of the Ocean of Milk) and the military campaigns of King Suryavarman II. Allocate at least an hour just for the bas-reliefs.

The Reflecting Pool

The main reflecting pool on the west causeway is where the iconic sunrise photos are taken. Arrive by 5:15 AM to secure a spot. Cloudy mornings can actually produce more dramatic orange skies.

How to Get to Angkor Wat

Angkor Wat is 6km north of Siem Reap town. Transport options:

• Tuk-tuk: $12–15 for a sunrise trip, hired from any hotel or guesthouse
• Bicycle: 30-minute ride, bike rental from $3/day in town
• E-bike: Great for the full Angkor complex
• Car: $25–35 for a full-day hire with driver

Practical Tips

• Buy your Angkor Pass at the official ticket booth on the road to Angkor (not at the temple gate)
• Dress code: knees and shoulders must be covered to enter the upper levels
• Bring water — it gets very hot by 10 AM
• The complex is massive; wear comfortable walking shoes
• Hire a licensed guide ($25–35 half day) to unlock the history — the bas-reliefs especially reward expert explanation
