What to See on Koh Rong
Long Beach
Seven kilometres of uninterrupted white sand on the island’s west coast, backed by jungle and almost entirely undeveloped beyond a handful of bungalow resorts. In 2026, Long Beach was ranked among the world’s top 10 beaches by The World’s 50 Best Beaches — and it still empties out within a 10-minute walk of any pier.
Koh Touch Village
The island’s only real town, on the southeast coast — a tangle of guesthouses, beach bars, dive shops, and restaurants strung along the sand. This is where the ferries dock and where most visitors base themselves.
Sok San Beach
A long, quieter stretch on the island’s northwest side, reachable by a bumpy road or boat from Koh Touch. Fewer crowds, fewer bars, more space to spread out.
Bioluminescent Plankton
Cambodia’s most photographed natural phenomenon: wade into the shallows after dark and disturbed plankton glow electric blue around your feet. Visible most nights but most spectacular from July to October when blooms peak.
How to Get to Koh Rong
Speedboats and slow boats depart Sihanoukville’s pier (near Serendipity/Ochheuteal) roughly every two hours from 8am to 5pm. Speedboats take 30–45 minutes ($8–15 one-way); slow boats take around 1.5 hours and cost slightly less. Book at the pier or through any guesthouse — no need to book far ahead outside peak season (December–January).
Practical Tips
- Bring cash — ATMs on the island are scarce and charge high fees
- Electricity is generator-powered in most areas and may cut off late at night
- Pack a dry bag for the boat crossing — speedboats can get splashy
- Reef-safe sunscreen is increasingly required by tour operators protecting the surrounding reefs
Nearby Attractions
- Koh Rong Samloem — the quieter sister island, 45 minutes further by boat
- Koh Ta Kiev — an off-grid island accessible from the Sihanoukville mainland
- Otres Beach — the mainland’s best beach, where most island ferries depart nearby
