About
Why Visit Banteay Meanchey?
Banteay Meanchey is one of Cambodia’s less-visited provinces, yet it holds one of the kingdom’s most remarkable and least-crowded temple complexes. The province is entered from Thailand via Poipet — Cambodia’s busiest land border crossing — or from Siem Reap through Sisophon.
Banteay Chhmar
The crown jewel of the province is Banteay Chhmar, a vast 12th-century Angkorian complex that rivals Angkor Thom in scale but receives a fraction of its visitors. Built by King Jayavarman VII, the complex features remarkable bas-reliefs including the rare multi-armed Avalokiteshvara carvings and elaborate battle scenes. Community-based homestays in the nearby village make it possible to arrive before dawn and watch the sunrise over the temple in near solitude.
