About

Why Visit Mondulkiri?

Mondulkiri is the largest and most sparsely populated province in Cambodia. The landscape — rolling green hills, pine forests, open savannahs — looks so unlike the rest of the country that travelers who arrive here often feel they’ve crossed an international border.

Sen Monorom, the provincial capital, is a small highland town at around 800m elevation. Nights are genuinely cool even in the dry season.

Elephant Valley Project

The best wildlife experience in Cambodia, and one of the best in Southeast Asia. The Elephant Valley Project is a rescue sanctuary for working and abused elephants — no riding, no performance, no elephant shows.

Visitors spend a day or half-day walking through the forest alongside the elephants, watching them feed, bathe, and interact. Guides are expert trackers and naturalists. The experience is deeply moving.

Book ahead: Day visitor spaces are limited. Full-day experience includes lunch and a mahout workshop. Multi-day options available for a more immersive experience.

Bou Sra Waterfall

10km from Sen Monorom, Bou Sra is a double-tiered waterfall dropping approximately 10 and 25 metres through dense forest. The upper falls are easily accessible; the lower falls require a short forest walk. Most spectacular in the green season (June–October) when water volumes peak.

Bunong Indigenous Culture

The Bunong people are the original inhabitants of Mondulkiri — a Mon-Khmer ethnic group with a distinct language, animist traditions, and a deep relationship with the forest and its elephants. Village homestays with Bunong families provide genuine cultural exchange. Several community-based tourism initiatives operate out of Sen Monorom.

Wildlife

Mondulkiri is part of the Eastern Plains Landscape — one of the last remaining large mammal refuges in Southeast Asia. Wildlife includes:

  • Asian elephants (semi-wild herd at EVP and larger wild populations)
  • Banteng (wild cattle, increasingly rare)
  • Pileated gibbons — dawn chorus starts before sunrise
  • Giant ibis — Cambodia’s national bird, critically endangered
  • Sun bears and clouded leopards (rarely seen)

Wildlife spotting tip: Hire a Bunong tracker for a dawn walk — their knowledge of the forest is unmatched.

Getting There

Sen Monorom is 370km from Phnom Penh — a 7-8 hour bus journey or 2.5 hours by charter flight. The road through Snuol is now fully paved. Most travelers combine Mondulkiri with Kratie and Ratanakiri on a northeast Cambodia circuit.
