What to See at Phsar Tmei
The Dome and Four Wings
Inaugurated in 1937 by King Sisowath Monivong, Phsar Tmei’s central dome rises 26 metres above four arch-roofed wings that branch diagonally across the entire city block — at the time, reportedly the largest market in Asia. The bright yellow Art Deco structure remains one of Phnom Penh’s defining landmarks.
The Market Floor
Stalls inside trade in gold and jewellery, clothing, electronics, and souvenirs, with the building’s scale making it easy to spend an hour simply wandering the four wings.
The Perimeter Food Stalls
The real reason to come early: food vendors ringing the market’s exterior serve bai sach chrouk (pork and rice), noodle soups, and fresh fruit from dawn — a classic Phnom Penh breakfast stop before the day’s heat sets in.
