What to See on the Mekong Discovery Trail
River Islands and Villages
The trail links a string of Mekong river islands and riverside villages between Kratie and Stung Treng, connected by mapped cycling routes, kayak put-ins, and community homestays. It’s a slow, low-key way to see rural Mekong life that most travelers passing through by bus or boat never encounter.
Flooded Forest and Wildlife
Sections of the route pass through flooded forest and known dolphin habitat, meaning a single day’s cycling or paddling can combine river-island village life with a real chance of wildlife sightings.
Single-Day vs. Multi-Day Options
A short loop around Kratie’s Koh Trong Island makes an easy half-day taste of the trail; committed travelers can continue north toward Stung Treng over several days, staying in community homestays along the way.
How to Get to the Mekong Discovery Trail
The trail’s southern access point is Kratie town.
- To Kratie: Around 3.5–4.5 hours by road from Phnom Penh
- Starting the trail: Bicycles and kayaks can be rented in Kratie town; longer multi-day sections benefit from a locally arranged guide who knows current homestay availability
Best Time to Visit
November to February offers the coolest, driest conditions for cycling. Avoid the peak wet season (roughly July–September), when sections of the trail can flood or turn to deep mud.
Practical Information
- No entry ticket — budget per activity (bike/kayak hire, homestay nights, optional guide)
- Originally developed with development-agency support, the trail network and community operators remain active today, though signage can be inconsistent in places
- Bring cash, as card payment is not available in the villages along the route
- A local guide is recommended for the multi-day sections, both for navigation and to support community homestay income directly
Nearby Attractions
The Kampi Dolphin Pool sits right at the trail’s southern end near Kratie, and the route continues north toward Stung Treng’s own dolphin-watching site at Anlong Cheuteal.
