What to See at Sambor Prei Kuk
The Three Temple Groups
Sambor Prei Kuk is organised into three main groups — Prasat Sambor, Prasat Tao, and Prasat Yeai Poun — connected by shaded forest paths. Each contains multiple brick towers in varying states of preservation, many still wrapped in the roots of strangler figs in a quieter echo of Ta Prohm.
The Octagonal Towers
Several towers at Sambor Prei Kuk are octagonal in plan — an architectural form found nowhere else among Cambodia’s hundreds of surviving Khmer monuments, and one of the clearest signs of the site’s distinct pre-Angkorian identity, predating the conventions later standardised at Angkor.
Carved Lintels and Guardian Lions
Despite their age, many lintels above doorways retain detailed carving, alongside sandstone guardian lions and colonnades — early versions of decorative motifs that would be refined for centuries afterward at Angkor.
How to Get to Sambor Prei Kuk
Sambor Prei Kuk is about 30km north of Kampong Thom town, itself roughly midway between Phnom Penh and Siem Reap on National Road 6.
- From Kampong Thom town: Tuk-tuk or moto-taxi, $10–15 round trip, 45 minutes each way on a dirt access road
- From Siem Reap: 2.5–3 hours by car, doable as a long day trip or as a stop en route to/from Phnom Penh
- From Phnom Penh: 3.5–4 hours by car or bus to Kampong Thom, then onward by tuk-tuk
Best Time to Visit
Visit on a weekday morning if possible — Sambor Prei Kuk receives a fraction of Angkor’s visitors even on weekends, and weekday mornings can mean having entire temple groups to yourself. The forest setting provides good shade even in the hotter months.
Practical Information
- $10 entry ticket, purchased at the site
- Official local guides are available at the entrance and recommended — they’re trained by the conservation project and add real historical context
- Forest paths are mostly flat and shaded, suitable for most fitness levels
- Limited facilities on site — bring water and use the toilets in Kampong Thom town beforehand
Nearby Attractions
Kampong Thom town itself, with its riverside market and silk-weaving villages, makes a worthwhile overnight stop on the Phnom Penh–Siem Reap route either side of visiting the temples.
