What to See at Phnom Banan Winery
The Vineyard
A small show vineyard sits in the garden for visitors, with the working vines running along the riverside road nearby. The winery grows Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon for reds and Black Queen and Black Opal for rosé — varieties chosen for Cambodia’s tropical climate rather than classic wine-growing conditions.
The Tasting Pavilion
Sampling takes place in an open garden pavilion: red and white wine, a brandy locally called “cognac,” and grape or ginger juice for those skipping the alcohol. Reviews of the wine itself are mixed — most visitors come for the novelty of a Cambodian vineyard rather than expecting a fine vintage.
How to Get to Phnom Banan Winery
The winery sits on National Road, about 10km south of Battambang and 8km north of Wat Banan, directly on the route most tuk-tuks take to the temple.
- Tuk-tuk: Add it as a stop on the way to or from Wat Banan and Phnom Sampeau — most drivers know it
- Boat: The seasonal Sangkae River route between Battambang and Wat Banan passes close by
Practical Tips
- There’s no entrance fee, but a small purchase or contribution is appreciated given it’s a local family initiative
- Treat it as a quick, light-hearted stop rather than a destination in its own right
- Best combined with Wat Banan, a short distance further south
Nearby Attractions
- Wat Banan — the “mini Angkor Wat” temple, 8km further south on the same road
- Phnom Sampeau — hilltop temple and Killing Caves memorial, on the way back toward Battambang
